THE CHALLENGE
Carbon accounting across multiple clients with no dedicated platform was hitting a ceiling.
Carbon accounting is already complex. Doing it across multiple clients with no dedicated platform made it harder than it needed to be — emissions spread across spreadsheets, no scope-level visibility, and no way for clients to read their own data.
- Critical emissions data had no clear home — spreadsheets across facilities, scopes, and reporting periods with no unified structure.
- Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions weren't tracked in a way that gave consultants or clients a real-time breakdown.
- Even when numbers were right, presenting them to client orgs in an understandable, navigable interface didn't exist.
- CostMos didn't just need better tooling — they needed a product with thought-through user journeys and role-based access.
CostMos is a carbon management consultancy helping organizations understand, measure, and reduce their environmental footprint. Their work sits at the intersection of compliance, sustainability strategy, and data — managing emission tracking across multiple client organizations, each with their own facilities, activities, and reporting requirements. As their client base grew, the limitations of working across spreadsheets and disconnected tools became impossible to ignore. CostMos partnered with Vizdale to conceive, design, and build CarbonTally — a purpose-built carbon management platform that's now live and actively in use.
A structured, intuitive platform that turns emission data into clarity
Dual-version platform
A tailored experience for consultants managing multiple clients, and a separate focused view for client organizations managing their own data — both living within the same platform.
GHG Protocol-aligned dashboard
Real-time visibility into total emissions, active facilities, reduction target progress, and active contributors, with Scope 1, 2, and 3 broken out clearly at the top level.
Multi-organization management
Consultants can manage multiple client organizations from one place, with the ability to drill into any organization's dashboard, facilities, and activities independently.
Facility-level emission tracking
Every facility has its own emission profile with scope breakdowns, performance against baseline, emission intensity tracking, and a next review date — all in one view.
Emission source management
Track individual emission sources within each facility, complete with emission factor libraries, scope classification, country, activity type, and a full data history.
Comparative emission analysis
Current period versus previous period graphs at both dashboard and facility level, so trends are visible without any manual calculation.
Reduction target tracking
Set a base year and reduction target per organization. The platform shows live progress — including how far ahead or behind the target the organization currently sits.
Multi-standard reporting support
Built to accommodate multiple carbon reporting frameworks, with configurable reporting periods, base years, and emission units per organization.
Role-based access
Admins, managers, facility managers, and users each have a scoped experience. Permissions can be set at the organization level or down to a specific facility.
Complete data history and audit trail
Every emission source maintains a full log of entries over time, giving consultants and clients a reliable, traceable record for compliance purposes.
How we built it
Phase 1 — Discovery and problem framing. Vizdale began by working closely with CostMos to understand the domain deeply — how carbon accounting works, what consultants needed day-to-day, how client orgs interact with their data, and where existing tools were breaking down.
Phase 2 — Product ideation and information architecture. Rather than jumping to screens, Vizdale defined the structure of the platform from scratch — the four-page architecture (Dashboard, Organizations, Facilities, Members), the dual consultant-organization versioning, and the source-level emission tracking hierarchy.
Phase 3 — UX/UI design. A custom design system aligned to the carbon management industry, with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility compliance built in from the start. The challenge was making a technically dense domain feel navigable without oversimplifying the data.
Phase 4 — Frontend development. The complete frontend in React, integrated with CostMos's backend API and Clerk authentication. Custom data visualization components for emission trends, scope breakdowns, facility comparisons, and performance tracking. Page load targets under three seconds.
Phase 5 — Integration, testing, handoff. Tested end-to-end against all backend endpoints — covering data flows, error states, authentication, and cross-browser compatibility. CostMos participated in UAT before go-live.
What changed
Consultants can now manage multiple client organizations from a single interface with full emission visibility per organization. Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions are tracked in real time at every level — source, facility, organization, and platform-wide. Client organizations have their own structured view of their data, making it possible to act on their emissions without needing a consultant to interpret it for them. Reduction targets are tracked live. Emission factor libraries removed manual lookups from compliance outputs. CostMos now has a scalable foundation — onboarding a new client is a platform workflow, not a new spreadsheet.
CostMos came to Vizdale with domain expertise and a backend ready to go. What they needed was a product. That's what CarbonTally became.
